2. Progressive Side Step

The Progressive side step consists of three steps danced over 4 beats, to the counts "quick, quick, slow". The composition is sort of a stair step sequence of a side (and slightly back) step, sandwiched between two left foot forward Tango walks, hence the name Progressive Side Step.

This figure can be danced without turn, particularly for the purpose of learning the foot pattern. However, its primary purpose is to continue the action of the curving walks in a rhythmically interesting way, and it is especially useful for turning in greater amounts than would be possible with walks alone. In fact, it is the precursor to the more advanced [step]Progressive Side Step Reverse Turn||269[/step], which features a strong left-turning action. So it suffices to say that the Progressive Side Step is best danced with a slight turn to left. When danced in this way, slight CBM will be used on both left foot forward walks (steps 1 and 3).
