4. Cuban Walks

Cuban Walks are a series of forward or backward walks taken three at a time, to the count of slow-quick-quick. There are several variations in the beginning bronze syllabus, including those taken in closed or open facing position, as well as those taken in promenade and counter-promenade positions.

4a. Cuban Walks Forward

When Cuban Walks are danced in closed or open facing position with the man walking forward and lady backward, they are called Forward Cuban Walks. The figure in the man's and lady's charts shows two consecutive measures of walks, however, it is not necessary to dance them in this sequence. The order of the two measures can be reversed (based on the previous figure), or one measure can be taken individually and combined with other figures.

Forward Cuban Walks can be curved gradually to the left or right, up to 1/4 turn per measure. Each pair of measures can be repeated as desired.

4b. Cuban Walks Backward

When Cuban Walks are danced in closed or open facing position with the man walking backward and lady forward, they are called Backward Cuban Walks. The figure in the man's and lady's charts shows two consecutive measures of walks, however, it is not necessary to dance them in this sequence. The order of the two measures can be reversed (based on the previous figure), or one measure can be taken individually and combined with other figures.

Backward Cuban Walks can be curved gradually to the left or right, up to 1/4 turn per measure. Each pair of measures can be repeated as desired.

4c. Promenade Walks

Promenade Walks are taken forward by both man and lady in promenade position. They can also be taken in open counter-promenade position with an arm-to-arm hold, or in right side-by-side position with a RH-LH hold.

To enter promenade position, the man and lady must each turn 1/8 (to promenade) or 1/4 (to right side-by-side) between the last step of the previous figure and the first Promenade Walk. Or, they can begin in promenade position, if the previous figure ends this way, such as if following a Fifth Position Break that remains in promenade on the last step.

To exit promenade position, the man and lady must each turn 1/8 (from promenade) or 1/4 (from right side-by-side) to end facing each other between the last Promenade Walk and the first step of the following figure. For a complete list of entries and exits, refer to the precedes and follows tabs above.

4d. Counter-Promenade Walks

Counter-Promenade Walks are taken forward by both man and lady in counter promenade position. Although they can technically be danced in closed hold, they are more typically taken in open counter-promenade with arm-to-arm hold, or in left side-by-side position with a LH-RH hold.

To enter counter promenade position, the man and lady must each turn 1/8 (to promenade) or 1/4 (to right side-by-side) between the last step of the previous figure and the first Counter-Promenade Walk. Or, they can begin in promenade position, if the previous figure ends this way, such as if following a Fifth Position Break that remains in counter-promenade on the last step.

To exit counter-promenade position, the man and lady must each turn 1/8 (from counter-promenade) or 1/4 (from left side-by-side) to end facing each other between the last Counter-Promenade Walk and the first step of the following figure. For a complete list of entries and exits, refer to the precedes and follows tabs above.
