I had a left big toe joint fusion three weeks ago and the pain is still excrutiating. I had one on the rt big toe 5 yrs ago and still have pain. I do not recommend this procedure for anyone. Based on the first procedure, it was nine months before I got some relief. I get around on crutches. I am taking pain med but they said I could stop after 2 weeks but the pain is still pretty bad. The entire toe area continues to be red and swollen. The only relief I get is to stay bed-bound but they yhat is here hard to do.

This is all very interesting. I am now trying to make the decision to have the right toe fused. My orthopedic surgeon was very informative and suggested to get custom orthotics and try them out for three months before making the decision for surgery. I have a desk job, got some wide toed sensible shoes, but due to the bone spurs and lack of motion in the toe, and thickness of the bone, it causes extreme pain at times. I take off my shoes, put on my runners without the orthotics and get temporary relief. I also find that when driving the pain is so severe I can hardly stand it and want to scream. Bare feet is an option at home as most comfortable but sometimes the bone will shift and then again great pain! I have read a lot of comments about the cons of having surgery, but would really like to hear from someone who has had the fusion and have had success.
Sometimes I just want to get the surgery done and over with to lessen the pain, and my walking and enjoyment of life has considerably changed, due to a couple of years of poor posture, walking on the outside of the foot, and now at times the right knee buckles. The orthotics help in ways, but it is very difficult to find shoes that are comfortable, shoes that will fit the orthotics and shoes that are some what stylish for an office work environment.
Mr. Doctor said eventually over time the bones may fuse themselves, but what then? Has anyone had this happen and if so, was surgery required to correct the natural incorrect fusion positioning of the toe?
Need help to make a very permanent decision..

Just a followup. I must say that my foot has indeed improved suddenly. I competed in the Arthur Murray World Dance-O-Rama a few weeks ago and I was very concerned that my foot would hinder my dances. I had trained for about four hours some nights in the weeks leading to the competition. Sure enough, my foot has held up and I am dancing mostly every night. Yes, I will always have limited range of motion. But for now I can tolerate this. I am so glad that I didn't opt for a fusion or for an artificial joint.

I had fusion of my large toes on both feet. Have regretted it ever since. Cannot wear heal shoes. I will squeeze into a low heal for special ocasions, but very painful. Avoid operation at all costs, if not too late.My sister had same op, a few years later and had a joint put in .... much better option. Don't do it!

hi Carolyn. I am 68 and had fusion 18 months ago and operation was perfect with regard to angle etc. little pain walking again easily. That's the good news. Unfortunately the fusion has destroyed my gait which apparently always happens. I have friends in the health industry osteopath and podiatrist and they inform me they have Never seen any other result. Because of reduced big toe flex ion walking weight is transferred to 2/3 toes and to outside of foot basically making my foot almost unusable walking over a mile or standing long time. I am on my feet a lot so maybe compounding the problem. I am an acupuncturist and should have known this result if I had followed it through enough. It is all mechanical and absolutely logical. I cannot see that the result could ever be different unless you were not walking very much day to day. I am exploring orthotic at the moment but this has pretty much altered my life drastically. I am theosophical7@gmail.com should you wish to correspond

Can you please tell me the type of hemi your dr used. I had one and about 6 months after surgery, I was on vacation & my daughter & I would take a morning walk around the lake, (1st exercise since surgery.) On the 2nd day, I took of socks & noticed a big bump on my toe. When I got home a few days later, I went to see the dr and he told me the hemi "popped" off the joint. He removed the hemi and after about a year my toe really started to bend & twist. He did a fusion & have been miserable ever since. Hard to complain when you are social with the dr.

Thank you

Hello, I have had several surgeries on both of my big toes and recently had both toes fused. I've suffered with arthritis for about 15+ years, so I had bone on bone in both big toes. Doctors recommended that I have hemi toe implants put in, so I did. I had the left one done, then the right one in the same year. After months of physical therapy, I figured that the pain and stiffness was going to be a way of life. Finally, I went to see another surgeon and he said that they were put in 'too tight' and he could redo them and I'd feel great. OK....went in for the first toe, then 5 months later had the second big toe done...More physical therapy, toes froze up and I was a mess again. Third doctor (Dr. Oloff/SFGiants Podiatrist)said that he could remove hardware, do bone graft and fuse the toe. Surgery was on Feb 13 (Friday the 13th). 2 1/2 hours later surgery was over and I went home shortly afterwards. 5 months of recovery, cast changes every 2 weeks, xrays, etc and I"m very happy with the results. Three weeks ago, I had the right toe done with the same procedure. The pain isn't too bad. The toes have been 'frozen' for years because of the scar tissue, so having them fused is basically the same, without the constant bone on bone pain. I actually had NO choice but to have them fused and I'm determined to get my life back, exercise more and I won't have to avoid places that required me to walk any long distance (shopping centers, beach, etc). I have a good attitude, which is so important with the recovery.

Susan,
What exactly do you mean by "frozen?" My MTP joint is swollen and the scar tissue seems to have increased considerably recently (one year post chielectomy and osteotomy). There's less mobility and it is feeling like a "club foot" when I walk. But I'm still dancing!
Just wondering if this is what you mean by "frozen," and what exercises you are doing. I am about to go back to PT 3x/week.

I'm not a dancer but was reading posts about big toe joint fusion and came across these posts and thought I'd add my two cents. I was a runner until 2010 when the pain in my right foot big toe area got too bad. Fast forward to March of 2015: on March 12th I had big toe fusion surgery, with a steel plate and seven screws/pins put in my toe. For me, the recovery was pretty easy but I may be the exception, not the rule. I had been inactive for a while due to the pain in my foot, and became depressed and miserable and knew I had to start exercising for my sanity. On April 5th (3 1/2 weeks after surgery), I started walking a little bit in my neighborhood wearing my post-surgical boot. I would initially only walk a mile just to see if it caused the foot to swell or caused more pain. At first it would swell a little bit, and I'd elevate it afterwards. After a couple weeks, I was walking 4 miles each day at a 15 min/mile pace. I kept walking 4 miles/day with my boot on, then kept walking after the boot could come off. I purchased new running shoes when I came out of the boot. This was all with my orthopedic surgeon's blessing but he was very pleased with my progress. It is now Sept. 9th so I'm also 6 months post-surgery to the day. I've now started a combo of running/walking 4 miles and yesterday it took me 45 minutes to do 4 miles. I'm not breaking any speed records, but having the ability to exercise has made all the difference in the world! I think a big part of the reason for my foot's recovery is because I eased into it with the walking short distances while still wearing the boot. This also enabled my legs and core muscles to get toned and used to exercise. I have no pain whatsoever in my foot and feel that the regular walking has strengthened my foot overall. I'm also pretty careful about the shoes I wear - I wear Birkenstocks on the weekend and Vionic / Orthoheel slippers. Dansko shoes are also great (that's the brand a lot of nurses wear). Overall, I recommend this surgery because I had a lot of pain before and no pain now, plus my walking rehab motivated me to get back in shape. Yes, there are some shoes I can't wear because my foot still has a little swelling and will for about six more months or so but I can live with that. My best advice is to use an orthopedic surgeon who has done a lot of these types of surgeries. Dr. Smoot at Texas Orthopedics in Austin, Texas did my surgery and I couldn't recommend him high enough. He was recommended to me and I'm glad to recommend him to others. Best of luck if you decide on the surgery. I'm very glad that I did.
