One thing that I noticed is that once I got out there and did my first couple of dances, the nerves were gone. Have fun!!

Sigh, as I didn't want to overload myself (and save a little money) I only entered that short multi-dance. Last night I was wishing I had entered more. I knew that shortly after we made the decision to sign-up, I was going to be out of town for about 4 weeks. I was afraid that gap would cause a real problem.

The good news is that during that break I was able to take 8 lessons at the studio of a 5 time national, world champ and Blackpool winner in Cabaret. I had one lesson with Eric and 7 with one of his associates, which was incredible and helped prepare me.

It's probably better I'm starting out slowly.

Sounds like you're prepared. I always sign up for some single dances before a multi-dance. I'm usually quite shaky for the first few dances until I settle down and start enjoying myself. Also, I have a pretty good idea of how the floor feels after a few dances and if we have to change anything to fit our routine on the floor. If you can afford it, get your hair and makeup done professionally. As everyone says, have fun!

That's a good tip about the hair and make-up, but I have to pass on it this time. I've got shortish hair so I'll hair-spray the heck out of it, so it doesn't move and go a lot heavier on my make-up, but that's about it. If I keep this up, I'll consider it.

I'd love to have done a single dance, but there wasn't time to work on a choreographed routine in addition to improving my tango. I'm at an interesting point in my "Learning Journey". I'm finally able to absorb new information more quickly and correct errors, but that's relatively new for me. Three months ago I was still feeling overwhelmed and that's when we had to make the decision on the dances. What really has me very nervous is not being able to warm up. Going out cold and doing three different dances in a few minutes will be tough.

Wear a jacket while you stretch and warm up. Keep it on the keep your muscles warm before you go out on the floor.

Walk out on the floor with confidence and SMILE. Once you set up to dance, it's only you and your instructor on the floor. Listen to the music and be part of it - nothing outside of that matters as you feel the lead of your partner. Enjoy the thrill of moving across the floor.

Would love to see photos of the dress now that you have given it a makeover.

Have a good time at the comp.

Very good advice. That's just the type of thing Lon focused on with me when I was taking the lessons on vacation. It's hard to remember that isn't it when you get tied up with all the other stuff.

I just finished last minute additional repairs and replaced a few stones when I wore it at a dance we had. I wanted to see how it worked and it was terrific. Yes, I'll send some photos. I found that Hobby Lobby had really good prices on Swarovski rhinestones.

Do not try to dance better than anybody else. Just try to dance better than yourself.

That's very thoughtful and good advice. Unfortunately, my greatest concern right now is a problem with my elbow. I've had chronic issues years ago, but of course it decided to flare up last night and my comp's tomorrow morning. I'm praying the medication, ice and rest will help.

My comp was yesterday so I wanted to update you all. I found out we won't get results for a few days, I'm not sure if this is normal, but even then it may not mean much. I only danced in the Smooth Multi-dance and there were only 7 couples in 4 heats, each of us at a different level, I was "newcomer open Silver", the only one at that level, so someone said that means I'll take first (and only). But it went very well. There were some outstanding Gold dancers but many were bronze and silver, similar to my level so it wasn't too intimidating and thanks to Ballroom Chick, I looked terrific.

My instructor and I both felt that we did about as well as I could. I didn't have any serious issues, smiled (thanks to you all) and had fun. When I knew I made a mistake, people said they couldn't tell, I remained calm and smooth. Both my instructors were very pleased. The only bad part is that despite our plan to adjust for my arm, adrenaline took over and I went all out. Good for the dance, but bad for my arm. When I sat down, the pain hit, but I iced it and just tried to suck it up. I think I was so relieved that I could dance as my arm had improved the morning of the comp, I wasn't too nervous at all.

I believe I'll compete again, but there aren't many opportunities in our area, so I'll have to wait and see. Thanks again.

No that is NOT usual to wait days to get results.

NDCA comps (which are usually several days long) will run a certain number of heats and then call out awards. Then run more heats and do awards. The big awards such as Top 25 student awards, Top teach awards, Top Studio award and scholarship awards are given out the last night at the banquet.

MOST one day comps hand students their placement sheets at the dinner banquet.

Who ever told you that you would automatically get 1st places because you are the only one in that heat in your level is dead wrong. You can STILL come in 3rd place, you have to be pretty bad, but it's possible - I have seen it! At my first comp I watch a smooth heat where an instructor moved his student like she was 2 foot 1 inch tall. Had horrible frame work, etc. I was embarrassed for her! He still teaches and wonders why he can not keep private students.

When you make a mistake on the comp floor take note and move on! It's always possible the judges didn't see it OR already turned in their judging sheets.

If your looking for fun, one day, non pressure competitions World Promotions is great fun. Look them up and find an event to attend. They do a lot of them here in the States.

You can also go over to the NDCA competition calendar and look at what's near you.

This is ALL public information that ANYONE can access. The only thing that is not public info is the price list. That your instructor has to call in for.

Glad you had fun!
