In our studio we teach many couples to dance for their "first dance". Most of the couples do NOT choose great dance music for that first exhibition. The important thing is that they like the music, or that it is Special to them. What some people are calling "foxy", we just call "Slow Dance". Steping on every beat ... One, Two or even Three walks ... then one OR two side rocks (sways). Foxtrot, Waltz or Rumba Steps work well, but if you do a closed "chasse" it looks to formal, and doesn't match the feeling of the music. By doing the "sway", it makes the couple look like good "Natural" dancers.
I would hope that any "GOOD" ballroom teacher should know how to teach to "slow" social nightclub music. After all, most of the people who take dance lessons are not interested in becoming Competition dancers. They want to be able to dance socially and have fun!!!

I didn't realize the type of dancing you're describing was considered ballroom dancing.

ANOTHER VOTE FOR FOXY!

"At Last"... very earthy and soulful. Definately a Foxy..plus it is easy to remember when you are nervous dancing in front of an audience for the first time.
Don't forget to take into consideration the bride's dress. I have seen countless wedding dances ruined by the the bride's bustle swallowing the couple's legs! All that moolah for lessons down the drain.
I always ask now what their dress is like and put the student in a big square dance skirt so they can practice like that- It helps!

It seems that there variations to this song. I found this sample on the web:

http://www.albertimusic.com/audio/atlast.mp3

This seems to be in 3/4 and therefore not suitable for Foxtrot. Interestingly it has the perfect beat and tempo for a Viennese Waltz!!! The fast beat is subtle but it is there.

Hey everybody,

Will this one do?

http://dancevision.com/store/JD06/

We have couples coming for wedding lessons fairly often. Nine times out of 10 they've chosen music that fits.

Easy to teach and easy to learn:

1. Everything is a "slow" (OK, there are some extended slows).
2. When it travels the man usually walks backwards so no newbie toe stepping on each other.

It's built on the old high school clutch each other right turning circle thing with the man holding the lady's hand over his heart. No need on short practice to develop a forced formal ballroom pose. It's neither NC2 or Night Club Slow.

We usually teach the basic, rocks, walks and "the dip" which is the perfect opportunity for the grandparents to take photos.

We teach this to beginner social groups often, including a first class last night, and have everybody moving about the floor in no time.

The basic for the man is just:

LF Back
Replace weight forward to RF
LF side (Turning R about 1/4)
RF back

and repeat.

Whenever my wife and I go cruising we find this to most useful dance on shipboard.
