Do indepedent teachers need a business license?

Hello

I have a question regarding business licences. In the U.S., if I teach dancing (in California), do I need a business license? I can legally work in the U.S. Or does anyone know who/where should I ask about this? I have asked some independent teachers about this subject. I get conflicting answers. also any other resources for business or legal issues on starting as a new ballroom teacher in the U.S.?
