Arm style in ECS

I've been taking lessons for a little over a year and am now competing pro/am at the intermediate bronze level. My teacher does a very "ballroomy" swing and wants me to use an arm style involving keeping an almost straight arm fully extended to the side during chasses and swung in and out on the rock step. It's a very stylized look. I don't really like it. It seems out of character for the dance (maybe because I did some social swing dancing before I started taking lessons) and almost nobody I'm competing against does it that way. Any thoughts? What are judges looking for in ECS arm styling?

My teacher is having me do the same armstyling--looks like stuff I've seen other competitors and pros do. Everything in ballroom/Latin is stylized and "big" on the competition floor, according to my teacher.
