Variation of tango

(Okay, first, is there anyway to search the forums for a topic? I know how frustrating it is for someto ask something that gets asked ALL the time, or something that was just asked...)

I remember watching something a LOOOOONG time ago that had some kind of tango that's done between two men. I think. Does anyone here know anything about it? I can't remember much of anything else about it....

Did I post this in the wrong section?...

My brain might as well be sawdust... maybe that way it could serve a purpose.

I dont know how to search. But I believe the two men dancing reference had to do with the way tango was danced originally in the bordellos of Buenos Aires. Men were waiting, sort of lined up, and had nothing else to do with their time, so they danced. (as I recall.....)

Argentine Tango

My understanding, based on a film documentary I've seen about tango in the slums of Buenes Aries, is that the Junta banned the dancing of tango between men and women in public in Argentina.

Tango could only be danced in the bordellos where the prostitutes favoured the men who could dance well.

As a result men used to practice together in the bars and street corners before going to the bordellos.

The tradition has passed to here where in Argentine tango classes extra men learn dancing together while in ballroom classes teachers do not expect men to dance together.

Hm, tubular!

So, is there an actual variation of the tango where it's not just a boredom thing (Or in class thing) for dudes to dance with each other?

Even if it is just to fill time... I think it makes a better lead to know how it feels, so they get how to lead better.... You know what I mean...

I have never heard of any modern ballroom dance where men dance with each other, so I think that operabob's explanation is the closest you will come to it. I agree with your comment- it does make a better lead if the leader is sometimes follower.

And again, in line with operabob's comments- the Argentine tango lessons I have been taking over the last month or so all have me dancing leader then follower, to get an idea of what it's like.
