What do you think is the minimum level amateur who can turn pro and not have to give up competing as a result?

That's a tough question to answer, and part of the answer might depend on what style you are competing in and in what country you live. For instance, if you are in the US doing Standard or Latin, you might not want to try to turn pro until you are comfortable with and successful in Championship-level amateur events.

No, there are all kinds of competitions for professionals, up to and including World Championships.

Even the formerly amateur world championships are now open to professionals (who compete in professional competitions) from a number of countries including the US.
