hand hold

A coach suggested the handhold for man's left and lady's right should be with the thumbs butted against each other.{Like "here's the church, here's the steeple, open the doors, etc.] It feels really weird, and it's the first I've ever heard of it. Anybody know anything about it? Is it a teacher's insurance against pulling ladies, an Arthur Murray technique, something new, or just a personal choice?
