"That is why I say to those who say we should spend a year reading the book.BUNCK"

How about, don't read the book unless you are prepared to spend a few years learning to understand what it actually says.

Many teachers can quote the words from memory, but few fully understand or can demonstrate their implications.

Dave. In the early 50's I never knew a teacher that did not do as your wrote about Michael Barr taking that extra step. Wally Fryer Bob Burgess just to mention two. Open Telemark, Open Impetus
When teaching or demonstrating they never finished hanging up the air They all lowered and took the next heel lead. I always thought the idea was that we learned to lower into the next step.

Many people hang up to long, not letting gravity determine the the length of time. Starting a variation from a stationary telemark position my teacher a world finalist would not let me rise but start in the lowered position which would anoy me as it was harder to get going.

Again, a case of someone who may (or for all we know may not) dance fairly well, but whose misunderstanding of the dynamics makes their teaching misleading.

No you are wrong or misunderstand what I said. You don't push up on to the toes to rise even starting from a telemark,Bad habits are hard to correct.

Well you are not making much sense.

If you do not rise, the figure is not a telemark.

If you rise from a stationary start, the dynamics of dancing are poor.

What exactly was the teacher requesting?

I am not sure if we are writting about this, but I would like to bring this small point in. On an Open Telemark there is sway to the left on step two . Many dancers are on their way down on step three. As they are on the second quick of a Feather Step. Now go look at your videos and tell me it is not so. This would be a good reason for finishing when teaching an Open Telemark on the following heel as per Michael Barr.

Don this is a good point but the real resone is not to intentionaly stay up any longer than the body flight has determined. On the swing we have turned the engine power off and just cruised to landing on the right heal(one)ready to compress and and fire the engines again for take off swing and glide.

Continuing a downswing into something is a good idea with respect to the dance dynamics. But stopping as the next step one is placed is still stopping artificial short by using the emergency brake. To maintain ordinary swing dynamics would require rising at least halfway into the next figure to finish stopping.

How much you would apply the brake would depend on how fast you are going which if you are just demonstrating an open telemark is not very fast. If you wan't to stay up on the toes is your option and still needs the aplication of the brake and a little stronger at that?
