two-piece ball gown

I recently bought a two piece latin dress that I fell in love with in hopes of converting the latin skirt into a ball gown skirt. The skirt is made in such a way that no one would ever be able to tell it was a latin skirt. I was just wondering if it is too unusual to have a two-piece ballgown for american smooth. Is is common enough for a competition?

I'm not sure if you mean that your midriff will be bare or not.

If it's going to be bare, and you are an amateur dancing in USA Dance-sanctioned events, you should check the latest dress code to make sure you aren't violating any rules.
