Check the Learn the Dances section of this site. You probably want the version of waltz you'll find under the "Smooth" section. Have fun!

Try to find out what kind of music will be played. My guess is that while there may be a waltz or fox trot (perhaps as a slow sway dance), most of the music may well be rock and roll, and that swing, disco/hustle and salsa music might be played a fair amount.

Also important is your likely partners, what steps each knows and the level of skill, especially leading. (If a woman will both provide a minimum of tension in a dance hold and move in response to my usually strong lead, I can make a noice look good to most (unsophisticated about dancing skill) onlookers and, even more important, make the experience on the dance floor one of pleasure and satisfaction.

Whatever, I would focus on a limited number of steps of what I call key steps, e.g., the box (used in the waltz, fox trot, and rumba), a disco/hustle kind forward and back step.
