Brushing shoes

We are dancing on several different surfaces these days and our shoes are getting embedded grit and grime. I have seen messages here about brushing "properly" so would like to know exactly what that entails. I realize there will be several answers from different perspectives and that is ok with me I usually just take my shoes outside and brush the soles with my wire brush both horizontally and vertically, trying to keep it quite even but focusing on getting out any deep bits of grit. We have a laminate floor at home and don't want to scratch it up when we dance. At some point I may have shoes that are strictly for home use but not yet!

Tourist,

I have found the suede on my shoes to be worn out / "danced off" after just a few months (specifically the heels and around the edges of the shoes). I have even bought a new shoe brush, one with slightly angled bristles that seem to be better. I try to brush my shoes every time before i go on the dance floor. I have also found that just brushing in one direction does not remove all the dirt from the suede.

Eagerly awaiting replies from the experts....
