Jonathan. The International Style. In an IDSF competition Karen Hardy was giving the commentary. Out of six, one couple were doing the Swing Jive which is the one we all learn with the awing of the hips and the Chasses. She said they are wrong trying to do that style of Jive. They are having difficulty keeping in time with the music. I think if we look at the recent finals with the Jive everybody is doing Flick Jive. The other one is gone and is relegated to the Social scene. The basic timing is still the same but ( for want of a better description ) the Chasses are beng done on the spot. The knees are picked up higher also. Is this worth commenting on.

So was the music faster than regulation?

Or were they merely swinging their hips too much for the tempo? Traditional jive and "swing" both have hip swing, but jive has to be a lot more compact with more subtle and understated swing given the tempo!

Relatively inexperienced dancers don't seem to have much trouble dancing a subtle hip swing at regulation jive tempo, once they calm down and stop trying to dance overtempo swing.

Put it this way. They were the only couple on the floor dancing Swing Jive. There dance did not fit the music being played. Therefore it was wrong . They were chasing the beat. Isn't that correct.

I'm not really convinced that they are (there is after all a difference between subtle, compact swing jive, and swing jive that's too "busy" for the music), but on one point I have to agree with quickstep:

Being wrong is about what you do, not who you are.
