I was in the same situation at A.M during this past winter and felt the same way as you do and used the same reasoning in trying to decide etc. Yes, the women by far out numbered the men and at parties (which were included probably to soften the blow of the high $$$ they charge)I just stood and watched most of the time. It made me so uncomfortable that I never used all my parties. I made an exhaustive search of all the studios in my area and did find another studio and I am very happy that I did leave. (even though at the time I was sad about leaving)Call around. I found that studio's were very willing to listen to what I had to say. You can find a studio that will charge only for private lessons if that is what you want. There is a separate charge for groups and parties. If it does not work out then you can always go back to A.M. A few of my friends (from another state)went to several studios before finding the right one.I suggest you don't sign for anything you don't really want and sign up for only the minimum that you would be happy with until you decide if that is the studio for you. An interesting perspective.
I have found that the studio dances (Chicago Area) are fairly evenly matched, men and women. Many people are "Couples". The FA studios do a nice job in bringing all the male pros to the dance, and they dance with all the women, students or not.
(Also, FA Studios alow independents to attend for a nominal fee. I understand AM does not allow non students).
I agree: I would look for a studio that will let you buy your lessons your way..
