Syllabus/Legal Question

I understand Arthur Murray Syllabus is copyrighted, but to what extent? I understand that listing the steps and explaining them will violate their copyright, but is listing their steps and matching them to ISTD or DVIDA syllabi? If it is ok does such a list exist?

Thanks

Shawn

"I understand Arthur Murray Syllabus is copyrighted, but to what extent? I understand that listing the steps and explaining them will violate their copyright"

Copyright protects a particular expression of ideas (the book or piece of paper describing or listing them), not the ideas or information themselves.

However copyright may not be the only protection mechanism employed. They may also claim some of the information itself is a trade secret.

Also they probably have trademarks on the name of their organization.

So would a list of steps and their comparative name be a violation? for example Paulista = Opening out left and right.

Shuelin. I doubt if it would stand up in court. Unless they could prove that they invented dancing. which they didn't. Even if they had charts of the steps they would most likely have a sprinkling of Wally Laird Latin and Alex Moore Ballroom in them..
