Rhumba

An old Betty While dance book shows a measure of Rhumba music as a half note followed by two quarter notes with the accent on the first and third beat. Yet the book shows the steps starting with QQS, as does a Fred Astaire book. Yet an Arthur Murray booklet shows, as does Ballroom Dancer.com the basic box step starting SQQ. Why do some teach QQ to the side and S forward, when the music seem to say S forward, the side QQ? Why wouldn't one start on the first beat?

Gerald. Since it is social Rumba, you can dance it anyway you like as long as you feel it goes with the rythem of the music. Have Fun.

I thought I had heard that AM copyrighted the S-Q-Q pattern, and no other studio is supposed to have the man start on the Slow going forward, which is why other studios are supposed to teach their students to step on the Quick first.

I could be wrong, I'm just repeating what I've heard.
