Rumba is Spanish. In the US this dance is referred to as both rhumba and rumba, with rumba being by far the most common spelling. Looking at history, the reason for using both spellings is unclear. Since the ballroom version of rumba is not very close to the Cuban rumbas, it probably would have made more sense to call it rhumba, but it didn't turn out like that.

The list of words that have commonality, and yet have acquired different spellings ( specifically english and american usage )is endless.

One of the most interesting-- I think --Aluminum-- notice- an "i" missing.

The story goes-- that when the discovery was transmitted by wire, an "i" was left out-- it stuck .
