5 step in Tango

Can someone help me with this???

We dance USDance comps where the steps are watched close... Wrong timing, ect will get us marked down.

We are doing fallaway to a 5 step in tango and from the book cannot figure out timing. In the 5 step can we do 5 quicks at gold level, or must it be 4 quicks and a slow... Also we use this same step in bronze.. Does it make a difference?

Right now our instructor has the position that pick your timing, and then dance that timing regardless of what it is. She feels it is most important for the judges to read the timing.

Jan 567. Four quicks and a slow, finish in Promenade. Call the last two beats as Q. Q. Six beats all up.
To make it clearer. If you do a Four Step which finishes in Promenade . If the Tango being played is 4/4 tempo you will be stepping out out of rhythm on 1 2, which is the first in Promenade. If you were to continue into a Reverse Turn you would be entering the Reverse on 3 4. So take the extra two beats and turn it into a five step which will have you stepping on 3 4 instead of 1 2.. If you can get hold of Richard Gleave's tape on the Tango he goes into this in detail.
If you must do a Four Step. At the end simply stand still for two beats. A head flick can look good there, which takes up the two beats.
Having said all that. If the Tango is 2/4 Tempo none of the above need apply. I asked one of the top Professionals about this. I asked what do you do if they play a 2/4 or a 4/4 and you never know what is coming up. He said he treats them all as 4/4 regardless. Most orchestras now days record in 4/4. With the listening public 2/4 is not popular. I believe it is something to do with a vocalist not being able to sing the more abrupt Tangos. I hope this helps.

I just noticed that you said-- " we use the same step in Bronze "--

Hope you are not refering to the 4 step or the fallaway !!
