Sort of like studio confusion, but...

I go to an indy studio that I really like and I have also taken a lesson or two at other studios just to sample different environments.

But I'm a bit mystified as it seems that each studio teaches basic steps differently. I've been told that you can count an American rumba q-q-s or s-q-q. Fine, no problem. But one studio might have you do a crossover after half of a box and another might have you do a crossover after a right chasse' (sp?).

Not a big deal but why the difference? Is there a dance standard defined somewhere or a "correct" way?

I'm a relative newbie and I find this confusing. Thanks!
