This is the perfect age to learn. You can either start with group classes or private lessons. I'm taking private lessons at Just Danicing in St. Louis and love it. They have a great dance floor and a wide age range of dancers. Have fun!

PS: Another really fun dance movie is Dance with Me starring Vanessa Williams.

No, 17 is a great age to start learning to dance. In fact, many of the top ballroom competitors started dancing much younger than that.

Look for a ballroom dance studio or class in your area. You can check the directory on this site, at accessdance.com, google "ballroom dancing" and the name of your town, or check the yellow pages for dance studios. There are also sometimes classes at community centers, YMCAs, etc.

If you live near a college or university, check and see if they have a ballroom dance club. Many colleges do, and some of them accept non-students.

Good luck and happy dancing!

Hey!
Firstly NO WAY is it too early to start dancing. The type of dance that Jennifer Lopez dances in the movie is ballroom dancing and it's best if you star the beginners ballroom and latin American dance classes. I'm 16 and I've been doing ballroom and latin dancing since I was 5 and I love it. You won't regret staring to learn this type of dancing. Good luck

Shall we dance was ballroom dancing. Most cities have goup lessons and private lessons available. With private lessons being more effective, but costing much more. If you are going to college now or soon, many colleges have ballroom lessons and dances, that are very reasonable.

You've chosen a decent movie to give you the dancing bug. Lopez was particularly good in the short part where she demonstrated the waltz to "Moon River."
But I am guessing, if you want to dance like she did in the movie, be sure to ask your instructor if he/she knows the Argentine Tango. That's what she is doing with Richard Gere in the "hot" scene after hours in the studio. It got a lot of people interested in that dance!
Good luck and have fun!
