My instructor told me to keep my stomach in when I do the cucarachas. I was wondering if you are suppose to hold your stomach in throughout the whole dance or just certain moves??

Its probably hard to hold it in for the whole dance, but quick back and forth moves like that would particularly benefit from a tight stomach I think.

LFCirillo. In all of your dancing Latin or otherwise. Tighten your Buttocks all of the time.

Hi there,
another way to explain it is to keep your ab and underbutt muscles engaged sometimes if you think tight then you might get unnecessary tenseness which can impede your dancing in other ways.... like making you tired, distorting your motion/technique, and/or putting you off balance. While you engage your muscles, mentally visialize that energy going down into the floor and connecting you to it-this works esp. well in rumba! Hope this helps and good luck!!

In the posting above there is a mention of into the floor. It is worth mentioning that some who have first learnt the Standard Style will have learnt in the Foxtrot to skim the floor. Don't do that in Latin In Latin we are into the floor particularly in the Rumba

It's not a matter of tightening your abs. Firming your core by slightly pulling in your stomach helps you with good posture as does holding up your chin. Good posture = good control.
