proper way of spins/turns

I never took ballet or jazz so I do not know the proper way to spin/turn. Some people gave me advice to spot which is the one thing I understand how to do. Do you tighenten your stomach when you turn? Do you turn with your feet, ankles, legs, hips, stomach? Any advice would be greatly appreciated because I don't want to hurt myself because I think I am doing it right and I am not. Thank you!
