does size matter?

I am a complete beginner to ballroom dance but I absolutely love it!

I was thinking of entering competition when I know what I am doing, but I was wondering, does body size matter in amateur or pro-am competitions? I am not looking to win, but I would hate to be the only competitor over size 4!!

If you're not looking to win, then it doesn't matter. I'll be honest though, the higher level the competition is, the slimmer the competitors seem to be. From looking at ads for used dresses, it seems that the vast majority of competitors are size 6-8 and under. Don't let that stop you though: you'll find people larger than that dancing and competing and enjoying themselves too. I've pretty much seen all sizes and shapes competing. Some judges simply will not give decent marks to dancers who don't fit their image of what a competitive dancer should look like, but others aren't so strict and look for dance skills before body shape.

Go to a couple of competitions as a spectator and see for yourself what's out there, hopefully you'll be inspired to dance and compete.
