The Laird Technique

Hi to All,
I noticed in the Laird Latin book that step 4 in the Hockey Stick for the lady in the Rumba and step 6 in the Cha Cha Cha is not classed as a Forward Walk Turning and yet the lady does dance a Forward Walk and does make an 1/8 to left.

lluv2Dance/. How could you have missed that there is a hip movement to the ladies right on 4 1 which will without trying, turn her an 1/8 of a turn to her left so that she follows the shape of a Ice Hockey Stick and doesn't go straight across the man's front. All Bronze Medal stuff. Don't forget there is 3/8 of a turn to the left at the end of step five which is on beat three and is counted 3 and.
If you did the Box Rumba you wouldn't have to worry about this.

@Serendipidy: It sounds like you are describing the very common mistake of turning too early. The lady should pass in front of the man, making good use of eye contact through the window of the joined raised hands, before veering away to make the shape of a hockey stick (be it ice hockey or grass hockey). This is part of the 'will she/won't she' sexual chemistry of rumba.

@Iluv2Dance: It is common to regard turns of 1/8 or less as a curve instead of a turn so the term Forward Walk Turning was generally reserved for where there is a definite change in direction made on the stepping foot, particularly when changing from forward to backward movement such as on the next step of the hockey stick.

Incidentally, the term appears not to be used in any recent technique books.
