What makes Blackpool the greatest competition on earth. One reason who would travell half way around the world for a one or two day competition. Blackpool runs for nine days. Last year for the Amatuer Ballroom it took spilled over into two days because of the large entry.Something else that does help is it is just outside the holiday season. A few weeks later and accomodation anywhere near the town centre would be hard to find. In season I read that a Million people a day arrive in Blackpool.

Is this competition ever shown on public television in the States, like America's Ballroom Challenge out of Columbus, Ohio?
I don't recall ever seeing anything out of Blackpool, unless it is the DanceSport competitions or some other World Championships event that has been on, and I just didn't realize it was out of Blackpool.
I'm thinking it has to have been televised in some format over here in the States. It sounds way too big to not have someone take notice.

To my knowledge, its not been shown on English TV .

Could be several reasons, of which we are not privy to .( Public release agreements, programming, fees etc. ? )

Primarily because it had little or no competition when the format was put in place, and , do remember , the UK was the most dominant of the style, and it did not have the following in most countries. that is has today.

Add to that, the majority of the premium dancers were from the UK, so why would they need the expense of travel ?

Lastly-- location-- probably the most reasonably cost effective site for b/room and lodgings ( still is )

Blackpool ISN'T half way around the world - unless you happen to be in a country that is half way around the world from Blackpool.

That's a uniquely American way of looking at world geography, if I may say so.

For those who don't know the only group allowed to film the British now have a live presentation at a price on the Inter-Net.See if you can find your way to thedancingchannels.com. Live full screen DVD Quality.
If we go to last years Blackpool there were more competitors from Japan and China than from the US.
For those who are interested the championships have been going since 1920. But in its present form , without Latin has been going since 1931
Latin came in in 1964.
If a IDSF official is reading this Keep your hungry little hands off this one. Don't try what you did to the Dutch Championship in Assen. It is rumoured......
