Coaching Sessions and Additional Fees

If a dance coach is hired to choreograph a routine, is it common for a teacher to charge the student, who is already paying for the coach's fees which include a floor fee, for their time as well?

I just curious what others have experienced.

I just went through this very same issue not too many months ago. I sought advise thought this site and other professionals/amateurs.
The responses leaned heavily to
"do not pay twice". A large percentage of the responses leaned to the
pay for the coach not the teacher mode.
The teacher/pro's of experience learn from the coach and they get choreography as well. Many teachers appreciate the time a coach spends with them and their students and will not charge as they are (in some instances as the responses read)getting a lesson for free. If your teacher is charging for his time and you are also paying the floor fee and the coach fee, find another instructor who has choreography background, more experience or find a teacher who would be thrilled to get a free session with a coach/choreographer while you pay for one not both. First, talk to your teacher your with now and tell him/her how you feel, maybe he/she only has limited experience in terms of billing. You won't know until you ask/discuss and then decide.

Sorry, note - it is common practice for chain studios to have the client pay for everything. You didn't mention if your teacher is independent or with a franchise chain studio.

When I have had routines choreographed, I have paid a fee to the outside coach, plus the regular fee for my teacher. Both my teacher and the choreographer work on the routine together. We do not have to pay a floor fee at our studio.

It is customary for the instructor to charge their regular hourly rate - even if a coach is working with you and being paid. You have to remember that those coachings are for YOUR dancing and you're still using your teacher's time.

I think it's vital to have coachings. It's a great way to get additional input and training.

Myself and other students feel that if the teacher and the coach and the stdent are working on choreography together for the student's benefit and with the student's input and active participation, the extra fee is acceptable, but when the student sometimes realizes they are paying the added fee for a teacher to learn from the coach with little or no imput from or involvement with the student, the added fee is excessive. At times like that, the student ought to just pay the coach to instruct the teacher. This way the teacher learns the choreography, and can later instruct the student. Otherwise, a student stands around wondering why they are paying for everything.

No it's not a franchise chain. studio.

Thanks for all the repsonses!
