I don't know if I am dancing the cumbia correctly or not. I just use the steps I know in Mambo and Salsa applying to cumbia. Occasionally, if the lady who I dance with know the International style, I will take her to a hip twist, side to side or cucaracha.

I did notice that Latinos dance to cumbia with an additional tap or kick step, like step-step-step-tap(kick) or quick-quick-quick-tap(kick). Sometimes I would add this additional tap steps myself but only when I move laterally to right side or left side then followed by a ballroom style spot turn(also ended with a tap).

I really miss the dancing at the MGM Hotel's Richardo Mexican restaurent(right outside of MGM Grand Garden, Vegas, of course) where 3 Mexican brothers played Salsa, Merenque, Rumba and Cumbia(occasionally Jive and cha-cha, too).
