In the basic waltz we are bringing our feet together, this gives a more vertical rise than in the foxtrot where the feet are passing. If you were dancing a passing natural in the waltz where the feet pass each other the rise would be the same as in the foxtrot. Because of the timing in the waltz the rise is gradual . Again because of the timing in the foxtrot there is a quick rise at the end of the first step. Rise is not something you should think about or try to do as it is the end result of what has gone before it,for example; if you don't lower the only rise you have is foot rise from moving from heal to toe. Don't try to rise just let it happen by it's self. Cheers
