progressive link step

can anyone help me with a step called the progressive link step? our tutor is away on a long holiday and we're not sure of the footwork.
It's international slow waltz
Man's step: Left forward on 1 on LOD
bring right to left on 2, rise and sway to right.
sway to left at end of 2/start of 3 and 'fall-out' (not literally!!) onto left foot on 3 diagonal to centre.
It's an attractive step.
My query:
On the "bring right to left on 2" - should the right be brought against left or separated by about 6 - 9 inches? It seems to be danceable either way.
A small point perhaps, but important to me!
