Of course there is also Argentine Tango which isn't a ballroom dance at all but is hugely popular in France and Italy from what I've heard.

Easy to get hooked on, but limited in activity and usually very partner oriented .

The last class I taught, 9 ladies and 3 guys .. gave up after one course .
You might have better luck in a metro area .

Yes Terence you are right.

I take it in a Metro...usually the opposite, 9 guys to 3 ladies.

AND...impossible to dance unless you have an active community, but extremely sensual and fun.

I don't want to learn Argentine Tango.

Nobodies tell me about Samba ?

Is it a difficult dance to learn ?
It seems to be quick and some figures seem to be very technical

Samba is not like any other dance.

Samba motion isdifferent from Latin motion and Samba rhythms are quite distinctive and can be complex although you can do quite a bit of dancing with the simpler rhythms.

Once you learn how to transfer weight in Samba, most of its patterns are pretty easy at the social level. It's a very high-energy dance that is very popular at studio parties around here.

Good luck.

Partick-Yv. The Samba is the hardest dance by far. With its continuouse body tick and changing rhythms. It can change from one thythm to another in just a couple of bars of music and back again. Unlike the Rumba and Cha we arrive with a knee that is bent and the heel must be on the floor on the beat which means the ball of the foot arrives first otherwise you will be chasing the beat. This dance cannot be learnt correctly without an expert instructing.
Samba can be delicious

Patrick,

If you want to learn to do the Samba, then learn the Samba. If what you are dancing isn't making you happy then you shouldn't bother.

Samba rhythms are catchy and fun. The steps can be a little hard at first but after one or two times through them you'll be fine.

Go for it!! Besides it gives you an excuse to go to Carnavale in Brazil. How could that be a bad thing!!

Happy new year to all, re your question, lets pick on waltz, you can practice and master the waltz by starting with change step. Its just a walk starting on your left or right foot then a sidestep and close, then go back side and close. If you can master this you can dance the waltz already.
