Lead and follow

When I dance with various ladies at the local senior center,I find that many of them seem to be ahead of me on the steps.
I think I put my weight on my foot pretty much right on the beat, but the partner seems to be shifting her weight sooner and pulling away from me. If I try to shift my weight sooner, they are still ahead of me. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
I think your partner is back leading, just a bit. Next time you experience this you might suggest that she close her eyes and see what happens. As a follow you have to learn trust and many follows are not taught to trust their lead. The more confidence you show on the dance floor them more your follow will trust and give you full control.
