I am not an extremely short girl. I guess I am in the middle range. I am 6"4 now, and I just started preparing for my first competition for novice standard.

There were a few times that people told me that I may be a little short for standard because standard dancers need to look talk and elegant. Is there actually an ideal height range for standard dancers?

Although no one may acknowledge it publicly, I think judges do look favorably on taller dancers in standard comps. I know a couple who are both under 5'5. They are working very hard at looking bigger, under the instruction of a champion who told them they do not look like a competitive couple although there is nothing wrong with their frame. They seem to lose out to taller couples on a regular basis (often a rule 11 decision). My partner and I are 5'8 and 5'5, not tall by any standard. At the last comp, a very tall couple always started right beside us and danced down the walls beside us. When we moved away from them at the start of a new event, they followed us. My partner suggested that they were trying to make themselves look better by purposely positioning themselves by a shorter couple.
