Terminology Assistance, Please

Good Day to All,

I am seeking to better understand a term I have heard while studying an instuctional DVD. I am tudying the USISTD DVD for American Smooth Waltz at the silver level. During the demonstration of the Shadow Open Left Turns, Esther Don uses the term "streamlining" (Or so I believe that is what I am hearing.) for the movements in bars 3 and 6 of the complete figure. I notice the dancers changing direction a bit, first from DC to LOD in bar 3 before the open left turn and then from DW to LOD in bar 6 after the open left turn.

Does streamling refer to the slight directional change I am seeing?

Thanks in advance,

"S/Lining" is a very old term used in American style Silver F/trot and Waltz.

It was meant to imply the travelling of combined bars in a straight line , without closing the feet . This was done Lady in Line.

It then was implemented ,with a changing outside partner action, and became much like the 3 step and feather which is in the Intern.style .

That's interesting.

Thanks, Terence!

Terence,
Would some instructors refer to that as a "forward progressive" to set up a turn or would it be something totally different, mainly because of the outside partner action you refer to?
Also, the feet do come together in the progressive, so maybe I answered my own question?

The feet do pass thruout the figure. It was introduced as a prelude to Silver style.

In waltz, 3 bars danced down the LOD with the 3rd bar closing ( all danced LIL ).

F/T the same.

Its worth noting, that A/Murrays basic, was taught facing LOD ( I always changed that to a standard 1/4 turn figure ).

The term progressive in Amer.style, used to denote anything that moved down the LOD .So in essence, one could dance Waltz closed changes down the LOD, and that would be deemed progressive .
