What is the rhythm of Samba? QQS, QQS? Or is it SQQ, SQQ?

You can't describe it in slows and quicks. It is 1 a2 a3 a4. The 'A' is half of a quick before the 2. So it a quarter beat before the 2.

Thank you LadyDance. I had always learned it with 1 a2, etc. But someone threw the question out in a group discussion as to the rhythm in quicks and slows and compared the rhythm to the Night Club Two Step. There was a sudden challenge. Thank you for your kind response.

How on earth do we put 3/4. 1/4. 1. into slows and quicks. Take a Boto fogo Which is 3/4. 1/4. 1. or 1 a 2. In just about any dancing to music a slow = two beats and that's how it should remain..

Not entirely true. The beat values of slows and quicks are relative to the time signature, such that in 2/4 music, a slow = 1 beat and a quick = 1/2 beat.

This means that a Samba written in 2/4 (which many Sambas are) could technically be counted "Slow... and Slow", which breaks down to 3/4, 1/4, 1. Not that anybody really counts Samba that way. But if you feel the need to, you could, and it would be considered correct.

Regards,
Jonathan

I have been dancing ballroom about 25 years and never had the Samba rhythm question come up ever before. Thank you all for your input. It sure did make us THINK!
