I have chosen the song "At Last" for our wedding song, but cannot find a dance that suites it. Does anyone have any suggestions? We have tried waltz, swing and foxtrot lessons, no luck.
thanks for any help.

Who sings this song? It doesn't sound familiar to me so can't comment...

I'm assuming you are using the Etta James version of the song.

I would dance Foxy to this song. Too slow for Foxtrot or even Bolero for that matter.

BTW: Nice choice, great song!

If I'm thinking of the right song, then I think twnkltoz is right. You'd probably have to do a foxtrot or rumba to it, but it's not an especially danceable song. If you search, you may be able to find a different version that is more danceable. I know this can be difficult; not long ago a classmate of mine was trying to find a good danceable version of his wedding song and asking me for what I thought (since I'm the one with the most ballroom experience in the department). Good luck. If you can't find another version of the song, then maybe your teacher will be able to choreograph something for you that will work well to the version you do have.

Congrats on your wedding! I LOVE that song, but unfortunately I've yet to hear a danceable version. I think foxtrot or rumba is your best bet...slooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwww quiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick quiiiiiiiiiiiiiick....

Interesting, Foxy! I didn't know that was actually a dance...my first instructor taught that for exceptionally slow songs, but she called it "Glide Rhythm Foxtrot" and claimed she made it up! I just taught it to a couple who are using an instrumental version of "At Last."

Actually, there's also a dance called "Night Club Slow", which is great for slow, undanceable songs. I have seen it done once, so I couldn't possibly teach it or describe it (kind of a combination of bolero, nc 2 step, and foxy, I guess).

I would agree with evanluck. Foxy is the best option. If you are unaware of the dance it is similar to foxtrot. The basic is two forward steps for the leader, followed by a sway where weight is transfered to the left and then back to the right (without closing action in the feet). The basic is danced all slows (1 step per 1 beat).

This is a relatively obscure social dance based on foxtrot. When done right it is very romantic and of all the ballroom dances looks most like the general "slow dancing" that people who know nothing of ballroom dancing dance. It would be great for a wedding, more organic looking than foxtrot or rhumba and better suited to the song.

As far as instructors who teach it. It might be difficult to find seeing that you have already seen instructors who have been unable to realize that foxy would be right for the song. I know they teach foxy at Arthur Murray. This might be a good option. Arthur Murray tends to be expensive but usually cuts deals for wedding couples to get them in the door and interested in partner dancing.

Best of luck and Congratulations!
