Hello! Ballroom dancing is a GREAT hobbie! I have tons of hobbies and it is by far my favorite. It is also great excersize and a lot of fun. However, lessons are usually quite expensive. I hope this helps and welcome to the wonderful world of ballroom dancing!

It's like a drug - once you start you can't stop - it will take over your life - you'll never again be able to go away for a holiday even for a few days without constantly thinking about your spin turns or your rise and fall in waltz - you will torment your friends with endless hours of chatting about dancing and dancers, seeking out websites in a relentless quest for improvement and knowledge, downloading countless video clips and studying them into the small hours while your friends are out enjoying themselves.

But, to be honest, it's worth it. Nothing beats dancing

The expense question is impossible to answer...it depends on the studio and what kind of lessons you're thinking about. Private lessons range from $35-$100 per hour, but group classes can be anywhere from $5-$20 per hour. Find the studios in your area and do some shopping.

Good luck...as the others said, it's an addictive hobby! You can spend relatively little and have a great time (the dances at my studio cost less than a movie and last longer!), or spend many thousands and compete. It's up to you!
