slip pivot

Hi everyone,

first, is there any difference on the slip pivot technique btw american and intern. style, foxtrot ?

my understanding is the pivot action is from the RF, step 4. however, from ISTD book, on step 4, it wrote "1/4 btw 3-4, and 1/4 or 1/8 on 4"
does it mean that after 3, I should start pivoting on LF 1/4 as I moving the RF back ?

For lady, should they also plit the pivot action on 2 feet , starting with pivoting 1/4 on RF (back) and then 1/4 or 1/8 on LF (front) ?

Any idea or insight about this is greatly appreciated
thanks,

Hi tautang,

Can you give more details...

What figure are you doing prior (step 1 thru 3) to this slip pivot? And what figure to follow after the slip pivot?

the preceding of slip pivot is fallaway reverse. (1-3)
The whole step from ISTD syllabus is "fallawar reverse and slip pivot"
you can follow with any figure you like

You can think of this step as having two parts, the slip and the pivot.

The lady has to pivot on the RF at the end of 3 to bring her in front of the man to step LF foward as he "slips" his RF back (step 4), brushing past his LF in a slight curve, turning his body left out of the CBMP of step 3.

They then finish step 4 by pivoting together, man RF lady LF, to the desired finishing alignment.

I totally agree with what SocialDancer has described above.

Think continuation of the "slip pivot" motion. Smooth moving and no stopping at any point. The minute when the lady lands on the fallaway position she need to start moving. You and her will need to make a 90 degree turn as the ISTD book wrote as 1/4 (turn).

Just to head back t part of the origina post, there should be NO difference between a slip pivot in International style and American style.

Hi Tautang,
Reading your original ‘thread' you asked do you commence the pivot on the LF because the technique states that there is a 1/4 turn between 3-4. The answer to that is no. This amount of turn is written that way because from step 3 - which is backing the line of dance - the RF is moved to centre with the toe turned in (a 1/4) then when the body weight is moved on to the RF a further 1/4 or 1/8 is then made on the actual foot pivot. For all you ‘thinkers' out there, would it be more correct to write TOES turned in instead of toe turned in?

I am told that the problem in a Fallawy and Slip pivot is that some ladies mistakenly change their shape in the Fallaway. Therefore making it more difficult than it already is. Remember the technic book was never meant to be followed with a Parrot like mentality . The reason it has a soft cover is so that it can be bent slightly. As the great late Len Scrivener used to say , "If its not comfortable its not right".
