To learn something new, meet awesome people, and have a ton of fun. It worked out exactly as I thought too!

We initally took dance lessons prior to going on our first cruise. We purchased 7 priviates and groups, and thought that would do it.

Lucky for us we found a hobby/sport that we immediately fell in love with... 15 years later, still dancing, competiting and taking lessons.

If a survey was started today on the benifits of dancing it will take some fifty years for the findings to be published. In my humble opinion based on myself. You can expect to keep a good posture, much better than your neighbours. Your mobility will be better than most. The amount of thinking that is part of continuously learning will not harm your brain power. Meeting other people, and learning how to mix. The list goes on.
This is apart from the joy of moving to music.

It started because my wife and I were sticks on the floor at our son's wedding; we vowed we would not repeat that at our daughter's wedding.

So we took a couple of lessons and discovered a passion.

My reason to dance was my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer and I needed something to do where I would not think about what was going on, at least for a little while. He passed away on June 1st and this is my sanity. I found I love to dance and when I am taking lessons or at their group events it is the only time I do not think about everything. My reason for posting is maybe someone else is looking for a way to get through tough times, this is it.

ilovelatin - I'm very sorry to hear about your loss! I hope that dancing helps you get through these tough times

For me, dancing is a way to slow down from our hectic lives and reconnect with my partner.

I will be 70 in January. Although we no longer compete , we still practice our routines twice a week and feel that we have improved and are learning something new weekly. We do demo's for Senior Homes and that gives us the insentive to keep learning. Not only do we love to dance, but it keeps us fit and out of the hospital. People who take up dancing should look at the long term benefits. Dave

Dave-

Perhaps this will give you a chuckle.

The crowd at our ballroom is pretty elderly; not a whole lot of folks under 50. We celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary there, and all our friends made this beautiful circle around us as we did a waltz.

Afterward, another couple came up to us and asked us how long we had been married. We replied 38 years, and they looked at us with some competitive satisfaction as they reported "62"!!!

My wife turned to one of our friends and commented on how dancing seemed to keep couples together, and our friend quick as a wink replied, "Well, yes, it's hard to train a new partner".
