If the poise is incorrect it does n't matter how well they may do their Scatter Chasses or their Woodpeckers they will not get a second look.

I somewhat agree on that, but (allmost) everyone should deserve a second look (at least glance). So poise (the one before you start dancing) shouldn't be the reason not to look at a couple when they are actually dancing. Once a couples starts dancing and the have real problems (depends on the level of the competition) with their hold, it's not worth to waste a further look. If the hold is wrong, the rest can't be good.

I as a judge am looking at the couples I was first impressed.

I understand that, but keep in mind that you are judging not simply watching. I think a dedicated judge should be able to give at least one helpfull hint to every couple - if asked - right after the competition.

You might think this is a lot of work to be done in 1.5 minutes, and it is, judging should be seen as hard work,
