I think you're talking about the same quick release buckle we have on our ladies latin and standard shoes:

The buckle part I think you're talking about is like an inverted "u" hook. Let's use "n".

Just take the hook past the buckle and hook it over the strap. The hook will then naturally pull back under the forward part of the buckle and secure itself.
