Try: http://www.dcdancenet.com. They list comps both alphabetically and by month.

Is there a similar listing site for UK competitions?
Here's a list from USA Dance national site.

Competition Calendar

You can also visit individual chapters in various cities to find out about local events that you can crash.

You can also look at the "events" section at www.ndca.org

At NDCA events there will be some pro/pro events (usually in the evening sessions) and probably some am/am events. There will also be a lot of pro/am events (and probably most participants on this board will tell you not to bother to watch any pro/am events).

Keep in mind that competitions vary - some have more "sizzle" quality than others.

We have never watched any comps? We have watched professionals perform. So, this will be our first? Why not watch Pro/Am - we are so new to the sport everything we see is so exciting -
we have only been dancing 2 years, next week! - I don't think we will really notice if someone even messes up! Thanks! Which is better to watch?

Scotty, Ah - your first competition as a spectator. I remember being dazzled, humbled and inspired at the first big competition I attended.

Personally, when I attend competitions, whether as a competitor or spectator, I watch EVERYTHING: pro/pro, am/am and pro/am. Personally, I find that there are strong and weak couples in all of those categories. There are some pro/am couples that I would prefer to watch over some pro/pro couples. However, in answer to your question, I find on this board that many posters are very dismissive of the amateur half of a pro/am couple, and would lead you to believe a female student is just being lugged around by her pro, and those posters, no doubt would advise you not to waste your money on a session to watch them.

Certainly, if you can afford to pay the entry fees to watch multiple sesssions, that is exactly what you should do. See the whole variety of dancing - from the newcomer pro/am students all the way to the pro/pro finals, and make your own decicions about the strengths and weaknesses of the different levels of dancing that you see.

Also, be sure to leave enough time to browse the vendors - make-up, jewelry, shoes, dresses. Set a budget! I hope you have a great time at the event you choose to attend.

I agree with Clary, watch some of everything. As the Am in a pro/am couple, I am quite use to dancing with no one watching except a few other competitors. But it is wonderful when people do watch and applaud your effort. Pros are awesome, in the true sense of the word but I can't relate to their level of dance. But the women (and a few men) who are dancing pro/am are my kind of people so to speak. I enjoy watching it all.

I second that! If you have the time and money - try to see a session of each category, pro/am, pro/pro/ ama/ama. I agree with several posters - in each category I have found couples that I prefer to watch. At a recently "large" competition - Several of us enjoyed, very much, the Am/Am Rising Star category more than the pro/pro. Which was a pleasant surprise. Have fun!

I do NOT want to just crash in on someone else's party. I always feel that everyone at every level has something to offer us. Even Am/Am !
My instructors said even if someone crashes & rolls around on the floor - you would see "How To" and "How To Not" pick yourself up off the floor!
I would would just like to get away, enjoy a week-end. My husband loves to take lessons from someone to get a different perspective. He took lesson from his favorite Victor Fung, and thats all it took - he wants more! Thanks for everyone's help! Scotty Boys Doll
