Thank you Lynn, that would explain alot, since in high school I played a baritone bass clef instrument in the band.

If most people dance to melody, it may be that my partner at the occassion noticed that I was dancing to the beat.

Best of wishes to you and may your "misteps" become fun steps.

Dancing and loving it,

Wow Karen, that is a great explanation! It is true that most dancers just "pick it up" and can't explain the musical theory behind how or why they dance. I have know people who have unique dance styles who are very musical and great dancers. On the other hand (and mistep, I don't mean to suggest this is the case for you...) the expresssion "dances to a different drummer" is often used to kindly suggest that the person is not keeping time with the music at all. My DH had no musical background in his family and when I met him he couldn't even clap hands in time with music - not even in a crowd singing songs he knew well. It took many years and lots of practice for him to really get it but now he dances standard and latin very nicely and doesn't even need me to tap the rythmn with my foot before we start to dance So it is possible to learn it as an adult.

KarenL, thank you for your reply. I hope find a place here in Peoria, IL where my wife and I can learn to dance. She has never had dance lessons and it has been a long time since I have danced. I'll just relearn and enjoy myself. I guess that is what really matters, to not worry about it and just have fun.
