my partner and I are having some financial difficulty right now and can't afford to travel to the nearest city for dance instruction, can anyone tell me a little about this video set as in:

-what type of choreography does it teach?
-does it us mainly syllabus figures or open figure work?

-how much technique is covered?
-how would you descibe this set and what else can you say about it?

thank you

Anonymous. Everything you mentioned is on the disk. Three different weight positions in a single one Rumba Walkl. How to Rumba, or on the Cha DVD, how to Cha Cha Walks and locks. Posture .Pull the spine down at the base and stretch the upper part of the spine. How to use the hips with the correct motion, pendluim type swing, plus at the same time using the hips in a figure eight, or if you like the infinity sign.Demonstrates the right and the wrong way on all they teach. Need I go on. There would be enough on one disk to keep a person going for years.

if you are going to get dance videos, i strongly think you should consider Bryan and Karen's "back to basics" series. its the only video i have thats actually taught me something. The innovation series is better for open level dancers only.

I would like to share my experience to you for your reference .
As a begginer , my old coach skipped me the very important fundamental basic . He said he only knew the advanced steps. But I saw him teaching the new students box step . I asked him why? He answered : Basic figures wastes a lot of enery , complexed figures covered the bad teniques... Ihave to stop taking his lesson even he still owed me 96 lessons.
I felt very frustrated and bought DVD of selsa which I can dance solo. I accidentally found a website called www.danceuniverse.TV and became a its gold memeber since January 2, 2006. They provided a lot of instructional lessons with the top 6 dancers in the world . I review them again and again , I always have kind of advance from the net lessons which conceptarized me definitely . I did not say that is enough , but as a very good guidance in selecting instructor, practice and learn.
I hope it is helpful. Good luck.

Anonymous. Without seeing many of the other DVD's on Latin I cannot comment on Brian's DVD or many of the others that are available. But to say that Slavik's is only suitable for an open dancer is not correct. How Basic do you wish to get, You are shown the different weight positions in one Rumba or Cha Cha Walk and the correct way to Lock in the Cha. How not to have a space between the thighs, and a demonstration of how we should stand, and also shown how not to stand, and so on. If you wanted an Basic Latin for the five dances. There is one by David Sycamore and Denise Weavers. This is an absolute beginners tape.

Anonymous On both Rumba and Cha they start with a routine together, then man's steps, then ladies then together. This is followed by instructions Footwork Musicality Stance Body Action, you name it is there. For the advanced there is as mentioned a routine. For the beginner or semi advanced there are the above mentioned lessons. Each one thoroughly explained. Each dance is a single disk lasting 1.1/2 hours each disk. At this momment in time I have not seen anything better. I have both Rumba and Cha Cha soon to add the Samba.

thank you for replying, I have a few questions regarding your answer: when you say the routine is followed by footwork, are you saying they specifically tell you where to place your foot, or what part of the foot you are using and how it relates to the usage of your weight?

...for musicality, does it give just the basic timing or does it actually discuss how to dance more intuned to the rhythm?

on body action, does it break down cuban motion or usage of the ribs or does it only explain what is happening in relation to the routine.

finally, are the routines choreographed with open figures, or are they mainly syllabus figures?

Thank you

Check dancesport.uk.com. They have a pretty detailed list of what's covered in the series.

If you google something like "Alvik Latin Innovation," you might find a site that has a sample clip.
