Speaking from the point of view of a relatively new student of dance, and a "bread and butter student," i.e. one who is interested in social dance, not competition, it seems to me that the most important aspect of making a student happy is finding out what it is that THEY think they are paying you for. In my case, I am paying my instructor to help me have fun in a social setting. That is the way she gears her instruction - we spend more time on navigating a crowded dance floor, say, than where my left eyebrow should be when doing a reverse dingle-bangle turn. Just my neophyte two-cents.

As a new student of dance, I can tell you that encouragement, encouragement, encouragement is really helpful. I LOVE my instructor..............he just knows the right thing to say at the right time............His constant encouragement (not phony praise) keeps me wanting to dance,,,,,,,,even when I feel that I have two left feet!

that is helpfull !!!!
there is also a team that i teach !
10 people at my class ! comming more
yes i know very crouwded
that is all about marketing !
they do 4 hours a week dancing and 4 hours the party(They Pay for the Drinks) for only 50 euro !
that means they just want to have fun !
or might wanna get .......
in that point of View it is a bit dificult to explore what they realy want !

Teaching is one of the most difficult but rewarding things you could do. In my opinion, they key to becoming a great teacher is first to realize that you have the ability to effect peoples lives, and use that to create a positive experience for your students. Great dancers don't make great teachers, so make sure that you train on breaking down steps and techniques and you know how to explain them in a multitude of different ways. Alot of times, things that seem really simple for accomplished dancers are not easy for students who are starting out. So make sure you are prepared for questions and you can explain things clearly. Also, be yourself and have fun! You enjoy dancing, so you're students want to enjoy it too - if you're having fun, then they will see that and it will relax them and make them more comfortable.

I think the best teachers know each of their student's goals and keep those in mind in how to teach them, what pace to go, how far to push them, etc- also have a great attitude, be patient, make it fun, and be able to explain things in different ways.

Having learnt & taught for some 52 years
I have found the same words mean different things to different people & reading the differance makes all the difference. Less than 1% will go on to an advanced stage these are easy to pick (focased hard working & inquiring)most only want to be occupied/ entertained but walk away with the fundermentals so they don't feel gyped. Be good at your work & remind them that you also started from where they are now, be human. noel.

You acually said " Great dancers, dont make great teachers "-- wow !-- thats an indictment on thousands of pro,s.!!

I think what you mean to say-- Not ALL great dancers-- make good teachers--- with this, I would agree .

to terence2 - That is what I meant. I certainly did not mean that all great dancers are not good at teaching. Many great dancers are exceptional teachers, but yes, I have met some who are not great teachers. Interestingly enough, I have met teachers who are not fabulous, top level dancers, but they are still wonderful teachers and can still teach people to become awesome dancers.
