oprabob. Thanks for the music information. I wonder if this is the direction Rumba music is going. Its not strict tempo. On Paul Killicks web site it is possible to see him dancing to Shirley Bassey's The Greatest performance of my life. I like it.

One should not confuse Performance type music, with that used for Comps .

Terence. Don't you think that as new music is composed that it will or will not find its way into competitions. Are we to ignore music not yet composed and limit ourselves to traditional music from the past. Have you ever danced as a Rumba to Elton John's Blessed or Tina Arina's Chained.which are both reletively new. How about Jeniffer Lopez Lets get Loud as a Cha. Struck a Paso just recently which had no breaks in the music ( high lines ) at all. Without any warning it was a bit of a shock, but everybody handled it well. What must eventually come though is a four bar introduction in the Paso.

Lets clarify MUSICALLY what is required to truly interpret the Cuban dance we loosely call " rumba "

The majority of bands playing " pop " tune rumba, are losing the total essence of the dance ;primarily due to the lack of the clave arrangements and the accompanying instruments to create the correct " sound " .

I cannot remember who quoted this comment, but it drives home a point -- paraphrase -- The modern day tango music has never been the same with the ommission of the bandeleon " .

How can anyone begin to compare the authentic cuban rhythms, to some of the arrangements that pass today, for Latin rhythms ? .

As i stated-- what one uses for " show " performances-- no problem-- but I also believe it can send the wrong message .

I just had a look at Wikimedia to see what it says about the Rumba
Ballroom Rumba. American Style. Rumba is characterized by the Cuban hip motion or hip sway arising from straightening and bending of the knees, as opposed to Latin Hip motion stepping on a straight leg, which is used in the International Style. They are what they are. They have gone in different directions style and music wise in so many other countries world wide. Lets face it Cuban style Rumba is a tiny dot on the extreme outside of a very large galaxy. Which is not standing still.

Firstly -- the discussion is about MUSIC-- not technique .

And , if you wish to discuss the techn. differences-- many of the teachers in the states, abandoned the " bent knee " theory and adopted a much softer approach to the execution of Cuban style motion . --Yes , its still around to some degree , but you cant change it over nite .

And lastly , your cavalier approach to the latin genre, is much of the reason why todays proponents really dont get it !!

You also should know why that approach was used-- it dates back from the late forties/fifties , and was thought expedient ( mainly for the over sixties, the large majority of the clientele ) .

Not ALL teachers subscribed to that theory . I, for one , trained all my teachers with a totally different concept .

And by the way-- a micro dot ? -- do you really believe that the number of people subscribing to the Intern.. style of latin, outnumbers the whole of the latino population ?-- what fantasy world are you living in ?

I would say that the International Style of dancing which Social Dancing is based on as well out numbers Street Latin by a mile. In Moscow alone it was reported there are a 100,000 registered dancers. Just from memory I believe the IDSF claimed to represent a million. It was reported on their web site and is most likely still there.Lets be asolutely truthfull here. Isn't it a fact the the best exponents of street latin have come from a grounding in the International Style which includes yourself.

Are you actually saying that there are more people dancing Intern. latin world wide than dance " street " forms ?-- how preposterous !

Compared to about 40 million latinos ??

Ya know-- Cuba, PR, Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua, etc. to name but a few-- not even mentioning the states or europeans , who ALL dance salsa for e.g. and various forms of Rumba and Son
