Yes, what great fun! Fifty minutes of programming filler for every five minutes of dancing.
I'm always happy to see ballroom dancing being positively portrayed in the media and I'm equally glad to see people like Mark Ballas and the Houghs get some well deserved attention.
But I cannot deny my conviction that ballroom dancing, which may well be the most civilized activity that humankind has ever developed, deserves much better than this ratings-driven acquiescence to bad taste.
Is anyone on earth more annoying than Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris? The only explanation for their being on this show is the fact that Soupy Sales and Charo are too old.
Let's face it: despite some earnest testimony to the contrary, the dancing on this show is simply not very good. Given eight hours a day for five or six days a week, just about anyone could be coached to the level that these folks perform.
I didn't realize just how weak these performances are until I saw Tony Dovolani and Anna Trebunskaya (not together) dancing with real partners in real competition on TV.
Please don't get me started on the "validity" of the results. DWTS is a popularity contest. Period.
I think that a more interesting approach would be to abandon the pro/am format and have celebrity amateur couples compete against each other. Viewers tune in to see the celebrities anyway so the ratings would probably be just as strong.
Anyway, I suppose that DWTS may be better than nothing.
