If someone approached you and wanted to dance and asked you if you knew how to dance a box step, would you say "yes"..."no" or "I am not sure"

Thanks.

I'd assume they were trained in American style, but I'd know what they were talking about. It's not a movement much used in Standard, but is quite common in Sequence Dancing.

Considering that they would most likely ask you that in a social setting, say yes.

A box step in international does not exist. However, in a social setting, you can pretty much do whatever you want; like switching between styles, if you so chose.

Box steps are simple, and even if you've only been trained in international, a box step is a basic step you should have learned in your first lesson in Waltz, anyway.

Facing line of dance: LF forward, RF to side, LF closes to RF. Backing against line of dance: RF back, LF to the side, RF closes to LF. Repeat as many times as you want.

By coincidence, I taught the box and whiplash combination to a group just this weekend!

Yes, I have learned both American and International. I much prefer International but as other posters have said, many social dancers (in North America) dance the rumba and waltz box steps as the basic steps in those dances.

Guilty as charged. We do box step in rumba, Fox Trot, Waltz in American style. So if someone asked me, I would first wonder why they were asking, since it is a basic you first learn. But I would definitely say yes.
I like the fluidity and steps in International style, but not many folks around here teach it or dance it in a social setting. I would describe myself exactly as acoyne4521 posts -- I pretty much do whatever I want in a social setting and stick to the task at hand in the studio or when doing a routine for a show or program in our community. I would guess that describes most of us.
Long live the box step.
