No that is NOT usual to wait days to get results.

NDCA comps (which are usually several days long) will run a certain number of heats and then call out awards. Then run more heats and do awards. The big awards such as Top 25 student awards, Top teach awards, Top Studio award and scholarship awards are given out the last night at the banquet.

MOST one day comps hand students their placement sheets at the dinner banquet.

Who ever told you that you would automatically get 1st places because you are the only one in that heat in your level is dead wrong. You can STILL come in 3rd place, you have to be pretty bad, but it's possible - I have seen it! At my first comp I watch a smooth heat where an instructor moved his student like she was 2 foot 1 inch tall. Had horrible frame work, etc. I was embarrassed for her! He still teaches and wonders why he can not keep private students.

When you make a mistake on the comp floor take note and move on! It's always possible the judges didn't see it OR already turned in their judging sheets.

If your looking for fun, one day, non pressure competitions World Promotions is great fun. Look them up and find an event to attend. They do a lot of them here in the States.

You can also go over to the NDCA competition calendar and look at what's near you.

This is ALL public information that ANYONE can access. The only thing that is not public info is the price list. That your instructor has to call in for.

Glad you had fun!

My results are in! There was a delay due to illness on the event organizer and then someone else took our results by accident. However, I got a 1st in Waltz (95) 1st in Fox Trot (92) and 2nd in Tango (91). I was shocked and very pleased. Waltz was my first dance in a multi-dance and I was numb for that, then Tango (my weakest, I've only really been doing it for a few months) and by Fox Trot I felt really good. Yes, I'll be doing a showcase event in October too.

Thanks. My instructor thought I did very well for the first time. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks (if they work their butt off, right?)

Congratulations indeed!

I love show choreography! We have a great bolero show which was performed a couple of months ago. Now I am working on a waltz show and a really fun combination of rumba and cha cha. I find that the shows really serve to develop the performance aspect of comp events.

Good luck in all your future comps and shows. You never know what you can do until you try.

Thanks older, but I don't understand what you mean by show choreography vs comps. Is that what I think of as a showcase? I'll have one of those in October. I thought it was a comp, but my teacher said there aren't any scores.

I suppose you could refer to it as a showcase. The difference for me is that comp routines stay within a particular standard syllabus. Show dances, or showcases, expand beyond standards to include figures and amalgamations beyond the syllabus.

Performing and linking choreographic elements creates, for me, challenges to balance, core stability and frame. I always find that what I learn preparing for a show really identifies technical flaws and performance opportunities. The result is significant improvement executing syllabus material.

Many comps have "open" categories where a percentage of the routine can be choreographed non-syllabus material and which are scored. Demonstration dances which are not scored need not employ standard figures.

I've actually had this happen to me. I had a few of the judges outright give me 3rd for the performance I did, and others just disqualify me. It was a closed syllabus event and we danced for the crowd... messed around with my pro on our cha cha routine.

It was fun, but I wasn't terribly happy after I found out you don't automatically get first place.

It was still worth it. :)
